Master of Public Health Curriculum

The Master of Public Health program at UHSP can be completed in as little as 16 months.

During the program, students will engage in innovative learning opportunities led by renowned expert faculty from the University’s College of Global Population Health where they will expand their knowledge of public health principles while developing skills in data analytics, program planning, system thinking and entrepreneurship.

Program Concentrations   

Students can customize their curriculum to fit their interests by choosing between a generalist or epidemiology concentration.

Applied Practice Experience 

The program culminates with a three-credit hour applied practice experience which allows students to take the knowledge and skills learned through coursework and apply them in a work setting. Students can opt to complete this internship with their current employer or work with faculty to identify opportunities with partnering organizations such as health departments, non-profits and health care systems.

Dean of the College of Global Population Health and Program Director, Master of Public Health
David Steeb received his Master of Public Health from Gillings School of Global Public Health at University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill and his Doctor of Pharmacy from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. He previously served as an associate professor and director of global engagement at UNC where he worked to develop and oversee international partnerships and programs and conduct global health training and research.

Nicole Doyle, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Nicole Doyle holds a Ph.D. in Health Behavior and Health Promotion from University of Arkansas. Her research focuses on substance use and mental health, specifically examining stigma-related impacts on help-seeking intention, psychological affective conditions and the relationship with substance use, as well as the components of emotional intelligence, and coping mechanisms of individuals.

Sylvester Orimaye, Ph.D., MPH
Assistant Professor
Sylvester Orimaye serves as the program director of the data science program and has extensive experience in data analytics and devising implementation strategies for utilizing big data analytics in public health. His research focuses on developing innovative AI-based screening methods for the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and depression using an affordable and minimally invasive approach.

Shams Rahman, Ph.D., MPH, M.D.
Assistant Professor
Shams Rahman, a physician and epidemiologist, earned his MPH and Ph.D. in Epidemiology as a Fulbright scholar at the University of South Florida. Before academia, he collaborated with the United Nations and Johns Hopkins on global health initiatives, including research in health systems, primary health care, reproductive health and program evaluation. His research centers on critical public health issues, emphasizing the profound impact of social determinants of health.

Maya Tabet, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Maya Tabet holds a Ph.D. in Public Health Studies-Epidemiology from Saint Louis University and a Master of Science in Nutrition from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. Her research expertise spans the areas of maternal and child health, including childhood obesity, maternal weight, poor maternal and infant outcomes, mental health, and social determinants of health.
