A Night of Glamour Celebrating Student Leadership

Published on 18 May 2018

It was like stepping back into the 1920s, as faculty, students and staff dressed in Gatsby-inspired attire strolled across the red carpet rolled out specifically for this year’s Student Leadership Awards Banquet.

On Thursday, April 19, the annual banquet recognized student organizations making a difference in the community and student leaders who went above and beyond to help make the College a better place. This year’s planning committee added a unique twist by encouraging attendees to dress in attire that complemented the roaring 20s decor.

Tables were donned with black and gold programs and balloons were placed strategically throughout the room to give the event a feeling of elegance.

“Our students are stars,” said Andrea Guimaraes, director of student development and engagement. “The 1920s theme encompassed how we wanted them to feel like Hollywood stars for one night. We are grateful for our student leaders’ contributions to campus.”

The College received 94 nominations for this year’s ceremony. Junior Kristen Vu was selected as Undergraduate Student of the Year.

“I did not realize the depth of impact I have made here,” Vu said. “It’s very rewarding to be recognized for my hard work. This award serves as a reminder that small ripple effects lead to bigger impacts later on.”

P3 student Dip Patel was named Professional Student of the Year.

“I am honored and humbled to be chosen among great student leaders,” Patel explained. “I have been inspired throughout my time at STLCOP by friends, mentors and faculty who have supported me and provided opportunities for me to succeed. I believe that being a leader means inspiring others to achieve more and it is my hope that I can continue to do that for others.”

The evening also included award presentations for students in a variety of leadership roles, the Norton Writing Awards and student organization awards.
