The Health Equity Scholars program encourages recipients to explore how they can contribute to achieving health equity through opportunities in research and practice. 

The College of Global Population Health is committed to training the next generation of public health leaders who aim to create a healthier, more equitable future for all. Intentionally, this scholarship has been created to reduce financial obstacles for incoming freshmen and transfer students from disadvantaged (environmentally, economically, and/or educationally) backgrounds. The Health Equity Scholars encourages recipients to explore how they can contribute to achieving health equity through research and/or practice.

Scholar Benefits and Expectations

  • Gain skills necessary to advocate for disadvantaged (environmental, economic and/or educational) communities across the globe 
  • Guaranteed internship 
  • Assigned a faculty, staff or community mentor in the scholar’s area of interest 
  • Continued funding for declared major throughout academic journey at UHSP 
  • Active participant in the Center for Equity and Health Careers 
  • Participate in seminars offered by college and greater higher education community 
  • Participate in community service events offered by college and UHSP

You may apply for a scholars program prior to receiving admission to the University but must be admitted before the interview date of Feb. 19, 2024, to be fully considered.

Apply to Be a Health Equity Scholar

Complete the following steps to apply for the health equity scholars program: 

Step 1

Complete the Health Equity Scholars Application. Use your admission application log in credentials to access the scholars application.

Step 2

Attach an Application Essay. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, health equity is the state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health. In 300-500 words please share your thoughts on this definition. Do you agree or disagree with the definition? Why or why not? How does your background influence your response? 

Step 3

Submit a Letter of Recommendation. Letters should be written by someone outside of your family who is familiar with your interest in pursuing a career in health and can share insight on your character, qualities and achievements.
