BESt Pharmacy Summer Institute
The BESt Pharmacy Summer Institute is a six-week summer program offered by Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Express Scripts, Inc. and University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis. The mission of the program is to expose and prepare underrepresented students for a future career in health care, with an emphasis in pharmacy.
About the Program
Academics in the program focus on improving mathematics, science, language arts and ACT/SAT skills. Students also receive exposure to the pharmacy profession through pharmacy lectures and site visits. The program also focuses on professional development, emphasizing personal brand, character and leadership development.
The majority of the program is conducted on the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis campus. The curriculum is developed and taught by local high school teachers and college professors. The pharmacy students at University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis serve as mentors and tutors to facilitate the students’ transition, help them feel welcome and guide their development in building team skills and working on class projects.
In addition to classroom learning, students have the opportunity to visit other pharmacy practice settings: Barnes-Jewish Hospital (hospital pharmacy) and Express Scripts (managed care pharmacy). These field trips provide unique experiences for students to explore other pharmacy career paths while interacting with the pharmacists employed at the sites.
The program is open to underrepresented minority high school students with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average attending a St. Louis/East St. Louis city or county public school.
