student research opportunities

Research is part of who we are, which means we ensure our students can engage in meaningful research alongside expert faculty and clinicians at every level of their academic career if they want to.

As early as your first year, you can start your research journey to begin building your skills and experience or to determine if research is the right fit for you and your career aspirations. You may even have the chance to publish your work.

No matter where your research interests lie, you’ll get the exposure and opportunities you need to stand out when it comes to taking the next step in your academic or professional career.

Research in UHSP’s Centers and Colleges

At every level of your academic career, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty across the University who are pursuing innovative research projects, both in individual laboratories and throughout UHSP’s academic and research centers and colleges.

Through these collaborations, you will gain hands-on experience in the world of research and scholarly activity and be introduced to a wide range of research methodologies. And you’ll benefit from the practice and research knowledge that our faculty contribute to the academic program.

Research has always been my intent. I applied to the Research Scholars program and met with Dr. Bucholtz and Dr. Escudero. Everyone I talked to made me feel welcome and excited to come here and potentially do research. At UHSP, you can help conduct research, like tissue culture, in the Center for Clinical Pharmacology within your first year, which is rare and such a great opportunity. Coming to UHSP was an easy choice for me.

I wanted to be able to play softball, do research and get my pre-med degree, which was hard to find in one package. I love this school. I can do anything here. I’ve been working with Dr. Jellen in his lab studying the sex-attractant pheromones produced by female watersnakes. I didn’t recognize how unique our work is and how sparse the data on volatile pheromones was, so it’s been interesting to realize that the work happening in our small lab is potentially groundbreaking.

At some bigger universities, I feel like you’re just another face in the crowd. And even if you do get research opportunities, they’re not as robust as what UHSP offers. Getting the opportunity to work in the Center for Clinical Pharmacology was a big reason for wanting to go here. Especially since I was wanting to go to medical school.

Student Research Symposium

Held on the UHSP campus each spring, the Student Research Symposium gives students the chance to conduct research with faculty and showcase their knowledge and findings via poster and podium presentations. The event also provides the opportunity to practice sharing research at external conferences.
