Healthier Populations Start Here
We believe that innovative research is vital to creating healthier societies. Through our research centers and partnerships, we are making groundbreaking discoveries to improve the health of populations and change lives at here in our backyard and throughout the world.
Center for Clinical Pharmacology
A collaboration with UHSP and the Department of Anesthesiology at WashU Medicine, the Center for Clinical Pharmacology focuses on drug development and treatment for pain, Alzheimer’s disease, metabolic diseases and more.
Center for Health Outcomes Research and Education
Established in 2016, the Center for Health Outcomes Research and Education is focused on building project-based datasets to support community-wide information exchange and research capacity.
Center for Clinical Pharmacology
Created to find safer and more effective ways to treat pain and use prescription medications, the Center for Clinical Pharmacology was established in 2015 as a joint venture between UHSP and the Department of Anesthesiology at WashU Medicine.
With the center’s initial efforts focused on research to better understand and improve the treatment of pain, the center has continued to diversify to include investigators engaged in a variety of research areas. This includes optimizing the use of existing drugs to treat pain, as well as developing and identifying new analgesic drugs and other therapeutic approaches for pain. In identifying more effective, tailored treatments for pain, researchers at the center also are trying to prevent some of the problems associated with pain medications.
Areas of Focus
Improving diagnostic and drug therapies
Enhancing clinical effectiveness
Reducing adverse events
Precision medicine
Chemical biology related to nuclear receptors and pain modulation
Compacting the opioid abuse epidemic
The Center for Health Outcomes Research and Education
The Center for Health Outcomes Research and Education (CORE) was established in 2016 with support from Express Scripts Foundation.
The center is made up of a multidisciplinary team of researchers with expertise in health outcomes research, pharmacoeconomics, big data and machine learning, epidemiology, public health, and patient health behavior, who are united by a mission to improve the health of individuals and populations across the region and around the globe.
The center works to develop research-focused partnerships with educational networks, locally affiliated health care systems, community organizations, state agencies, and national and international institutions. Through its collaborative efforts with partners like WashU Medicine, St. Louis University, BJC HealthCare and Express Scripts Inc., the center works to build project-based datasets and support community-wide information exchange and research capacity.
Areas of Focus
Health disparities in sepsis
Outcomes in metastatic prostate cancer
Pharmacoeconomic analyses
Social and behavioral aspects of health care and pharmacy
Antimicrobial stewardship and resistance prevention
The role of community health workers in addressing health disparities
Center Faculty
Scott Micek, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCCCP, Center Director
Micek’s research interests are focused on the antimicrobial management of critically ill patients utilizing electronic health records.
Scott Griggs, Pharm.D., PhD, Assistant Director
Griggs’ primary research interests include heath outcomes and pharmacoeconomics, the social and behavioral aspects of pharmacy, entrepreneurship, medication errors and the future of pharmacy and health care.
Joel Arackel, Pharm.D. ’22, Outcomes Research Fellow
Arackal has contributed to the design and analysis of retrospective and prospective studies in a range of patient populations including rare diseases, heart failure and health disparity research among critical illness survivors.
Outcomes Research Fellowship
St. Louis College of Pharmacy is currently accepting applicants for its two-year Outcomes Research Fellowship. Fellowship candidates must demonstrate strong potential for establishing a vigorous independent research program.
