Pharmacy Group President Speaks at the College

Published on 08 May 2014

“Baby boomers don’t need a lot of medication management today, but they will in about 10 years.”

With that statement, Jeff Delafuente, MS, FCCP, FASCP, president of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) introduced why it was so important for students at the College to become interested in specializing in the care of older adults. ASCP is the only international pharmacy organization devoted to improving the health and managing the medication of senior citizens.

Delafuente was in St. Louis for a series of meetings and offered his time to speak with students interested in pursuing a specialty in senior care. He is a former faculty member at the College and is currently a professor and associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Pharmacy at Virginia Commonwealth University.

“There is so much opportunity out there,” he told the assembled crowd which included College President John A. Pieper, Pharm.D. and Amy DeWein ’89. “We need pharmacists who can take care of older people.”

During his presentation, Delafuente discussed how most clinical practice guidelines don’t deal well with older adults. He says that is a clear signal pharmacists will need specialization in the area.

“I hope the students take his message to heart and had all of their questions answered,” says Scott Vouri, Pharm.D., CGP, assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the College. “It’s not very often the head of a national pharmacy organization has the time to answer questions.”

Delafuente’s left the students with several pieces of advice. First, he told the students to get at least one mentor, if not several. Delafuente said his success is based in part on having good mentors. He also suggested becoming involved in an advocacy organization.

“Don’t be complacent, because if everyone had that attitude we wouldn’t have much of a profession,” he said.
