Students Volunteer at "Diva for a Day" Event

Published on 09 April 2018

While most students spent their last days of Spring Break relaxing before heading back to class, members of St. Louis College of Pharmacy’s Pharmaceutical Cosmetic Club participated in the Diva for a Day pre-prom event with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri (BBSEMO) on Friday, March 23.

The Diva for a Day event is held annually to provide high school aged Little Sisters with a pre-prom experience designed to prepare them for one of the most important nights of their high school years. Those who attended the event had the opportunity to pick out a prom dress of their choice, along with the accessories to match, and got their hair and makeup professionally done. After getting glammed up, participants took part in a free prom photo shoot with their BBSEMO mentor. After the event, the girls got to keep their dresses and jewelry to use at their own proms.

Members of the College’s Pharmaceutical Cosmetic Club got involved by bringing two compounding activities that the girls could participate in while learning more about pharmacy. Club members helped the girls make lip scrub and shea butter lotion. They also talked to event participants about the College and preparing for careers in pharmacy and other STEM-related health care fields.

Students taking part in the event were P2 students Julie Hubbard, Nirali Patel and Kelsey Nguyen. The event marked the club’s first time teaming up with a nonprofit for a volunteer event.

“Getting young, underprivileged women involved in STEM fields is a very powerful key to creating a better life for these women,” said Hubbard, president of the Pharmaceutical Cosmetic Club. "While prom night is a night to feel beautiful, we wanted the Little Sisters to know that they can also be empowered by education.”
