A New Home for the Eutectics

Published on 03 November 2017

For more than a century, athletic activities have been a tradition at St. Louis College of Pharmacy. As early as 1912, the College’s students and graduates competed in city bowling leagues, with teams sponsored by local pharmacies.

In 1958, the College introduced an intramural sports program, which included bowling, basketball and softball. Teams consisting of members of different classes, fraternities or groups of classmates competed during the school year for their league’s championship.

By 1963, the College basketball and bowling teams competed at the intercollegiate level. Intercollegiate competition ended during the 1980s, but intramural sports remained popular with students. In 1993, intercollegiate sports returned to the College when it became a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and introduced women’s volleyball and men’s basketball teams.

Today, student-athletes compete in 12 NAIA Division I sports, and the Eutectics add to the college experience for both athletes and non-athletes.

Until 2014, the Cartwright Student Center housed the College’s athletic facilities, and the competition gymnasium became known as “the Pill Box.”

After the demolition of the Cartwright Student Center, the College’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics hosted competitions and practices at athletic facilities across St. Louis through partnerships with neighboring institutions.

The opening of the new Recreation and Student Center (RAS) marks a homecoming for the Eutectics. The RAS provides new facilities for student-athletes including a competition gymnasium, conditioning facilities, a Hall of Fame room and event spaces.

Like the Academic and Research Building, the RAS includes reclaimed materials that honor the College’s proud history. Throughout the RAS, the old gym floor has been repurposed to create design accents, and even the old “Welcome to the Pill Box” sign will be on display in the Hall of Fame Room.
