Published on 09 November 2017

With prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMP) currently in place in more than 47 Missouri counties, the College recently convened a panel of pharmacy experts to discuss the role of PDMPs in promoting the appropriate use of controlled substances and preventing opioid abuse.

Held Tuesday, Oct. 24, the Alumni Association’s “Meeting of the Minds” attracted a crowd of 77 pharmacists and health care professionals who heard from a distinguished panel moderated by Garth Reynolds, B.S. ’00, executive director of the Illinois Pharmacists Association.
Panel participants included:

  • Kimberly Harper-Grinston, J.D., executive director of the Missouri Board of Pharmacy
  • Snezana Mahon, Pharm.D. ‘08, vice president of product development and customer and physician solutions at Express Scripts, Inc.
  • Jorgen Schlemeier, governmental affairs consultant at Gamble & Schlemeier and lobbyist for the Missouri Pharmacy Association
  • Amy Tiemeier, B.S. ’01, Pharm.D. ‘02, BCPS, director of community partnerships, associate director of experiential education and associate professor of pharmacy practice at the College

During the event, panelists defined the scope of Missouri’s PDMPs, highlighted the benefits and limitations of the programs and identified the impact of PDMPs on the daily practice of pharmacy. Specific topics addressed included Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens’ signing of an executive order creating a PDMP for the state and the effectiveness of St. Louis County’s PDMP. Panelists also provided advice to pharmacists on utilizing PDMPs.

“It was a pleasure to be part of this outstanding panel,” noted Tiemeier. “As PDMPs continue to be established across Missouri, this was a great opportunity to examine the changing landscape of PDMPs and what they mean for pharmacists and the pharmacies. We were thrilled with the great turnout and hope attendees found the event to be a thought-provoking and informative experience.”
