(YOU)HSP Spotlight: Nicole Bach
Published on 09 December 2022
Name: Nicole Bach
Position: Student Success Advisor
Favorite Food: Generally it's pizza, but but I’m currently addicted to the Thai Bowl’s vegetarian yellow curry
Hobbies: Reading, running and filmmaking
Favorite Book/TV Show: "Jane Eyre" is my favorite book and "Breaking Bad" is my favorite TV show. I’m a study in contrasts.
Interesting fact about you: When I was 16, I spent a year in Brazil as an exchange student.
Tell us about yourself.
I grew up in South St. Louis City and I currently live in the historic Fox Park neighborhood with the two most adorable pets on the planet – Aura, my miniature poodle, and Mimi, my tabby cat. In my previous professional life, I worked in the Latin American division of a reinsurance company before I started teaching Spanish full-time at a community college. I can’t imagine being happy in a job where I am not helping people, and what I love about higher education is that you get to support students as they’re growing into the best versions of themselves.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My adorable, but demanding, pets wake me up around 5:30. After I tend to them and have coffee, I do a loving-kindness meditation, exercise and get ready for work.
When I’m not meeting students or answering their questions, I like to spend time learning about things that will make me more effective in my job and in life. LinkedIn Learning is an excellent resource for personal and professional development. But since I’m still really new to this job, most of my “study time” is spent learning about all things UHSP.
Over my lunch break, I love taking a quick walk in Forest Park. On a typical school night, I’m at home reading or watching Netflix, if I’m not in the company of friends, and asleep by 10:00 p.m.
What are you passionate about?
I’m deeply moved by all forms of the fine and performing arts, but opera is very special to me. It’s a magical blend of storytelling, music and spectacle. The Metropolitan Opera in New York was streaming operas nightly for free on their app during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic and it was thrilling to watch productions with artists of that caliber.
What's the best part about working at UHSP?
The best thing about working at UHSP is being part of a community that wants to create a healthier society for all people and knowing that all of us on campus are doing our part to make that happen.
What do you want students and campus to know about the Student Success Center and advising?
Every single person in the Office of Campus Life is committed to your growth and well-being. It is our pleasure to connect you with the resources you need to be your best self while you’re a student at UHSP. When we see you thriving, it makes our day.
