Calling All Eutectics

Published on 18 May 2020

Phones are ringing across the globe as students receive phone calls from St. Louis College of Pharmacy faculty and staff.

Upon answering the phone, students are greeted by a friendly voice asking if there’s anything the College can do to make living in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic a little easier.

“We’re calling every single one of our students,” Andrea Guimaraes, director of student development and engagement said. “We want to make sure our students know that we are here to support them.”

A team of 32 faculty and staff have signed up to make outreach calls to 1,000 students ranging from first-year students to Doctor of Pharmacy candidates completing their final rotations.

“Our students are grateful for the phone calls,” added Heather French, vice president for student affairs. “Not only are we showing them we care, but we also are listening to their concerns and connecting them to valuable campus resources such as the Writing Center, tutoring services and the Counseling Center.”

Many students, faculty and staff acknowledge the emotional challenges that come along with social distancing and isolation and are using the phone calls to connect during this difficult time.

“It has been nice to hear their voices because I miss seeing all of our wonderful students on campus,” Guimaraes said. “I am just as grateful to hear how they are doing as they are to receive a check-in phone call.”

During a recent check-in call, P3 student Miriam Bisada spoke with Guimaraes about how she is missing the face-to-face interactions with her professors and classmates, but is enjoying the extra time to spend with her family.

“It was nice to have someone call me because it made me feel special, like an individual,” Bisada said. “I like how tight-knit the College is and how we can come together as a community during this time.”

As the semester comes to a close, students continue to balance personal and professional demands during the pandemic. Help us support our students by sharing encouraging messages at
