Expanding Residency Opportunities

Published on 01 August 2016

St. Louis College of Pharmacy is growing postgraduate pharmacy residency in Missouri through a new partnership with SoutheastHEALTH. This collaboration provides the first hospital-based, pharmacy residencies in southeast Missouri.

“We are always looking for opportunities to support residency training as the role of the pharmacist is rapidly expanding in areas of direct patient care,” says Jack Burke, FASHP, FCCP, BCPS, professor of pharmacy practice and associate dean of postgraduate education at St. Louis College of Pharmacy.

SoutheastHEALTH, based in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, provides a far-reaching regional system of health care services to patients in southeast Missouri, parts of southern Illinois, western Kentucky and northern Arkansas. It operates more than 50 care locations in 14 communities. Part of the focus for the new pharmacy residents will be on developing treatment plans for patients with multiple prescriptions. The residency is based at Southeast Hospital.

“Having pharmacy residents as part of the care team improves the quality care and outcomes for our patients,” said Nicole Allcock, Pharm.D., BCPS, FASHP, director of pharmacy at SoutheastHEALTH. “This collaboration will meet our goal of providing improved pharmacy practices for Cape Girardeau and the rural communities we serve.”
