Partnership Broadens Experience in the Arts

Published on 01 December 2012

A new partnership between St. Louis College of Pharmacy and the St. Louis Symphony will focus on exposing students to the world-renowned orchestra and its musicians. It will also broaden STLCOP’s experience in the arts for faculty, staff, and alumni.

“St. Louis College of Pharmacy’s collaboration with the St. Louis Symphony perfectly complements the College’s mission to be a supportive and enriching environment for growth, advancement, and leadership and to prepare our students, residents, faculty, staff, and alumni to positively impact patients and society,” says STLCOP President John A. Pieper.

The partnership will enhance the College’s music curriculum by providing faculty, staff, and student groups with access to symphony resources. Students will have the chance to participate in on-stage symphony events at Powell Hall and receive discounted ticket prices. Faculty, staff, and alumni will also get special ticket offers. And the entire College community will be invited to on-campus chamber concerts as part of the College’s liberal arts convocations program.

A chamber concert by Daniel Lee, principal cellist for the St. Louis Symphony, marked the first installment of the new partnership on March 27 in Whelpley Auditorium. More than 150 members of the campus community attended the performance. A second concert by a St. Louis Symphony quartet took place on Oct. 2 in Whelpley.

“When people think of an orchestra, they think of everyone in their tails, on stage playing a concert,” says Fred Bronstein, president and CEO of the St. Louis Symphony. “But that’s only one part of what we do. The orchestra today provides a robust and broad set of experiences to many different kinds of audiences. I really credit St. Louis College of Pharmacy with making sure its students are exposed to this whole other aspect as they go through their pharmacy education.”
